4 Tips for a Fun Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are a cornerstone to today’s wedding industry and are most often included in wedding photography packages.  I’ve already discussed why I think Engagement Sessions Rock so now lets dive into some Tips for a Fun Engagement Session.

This doesn’t mean you absolutely have to do an engagement session.  In fact, I find that about 25% of the couples I work with choose not to do one.  And that’s totally fine!

But even if you choose to have an engagement session, its totally normal for there to be some apprehension.  You don’t know how many couples tell me they’re nervous or that they’re not good at taking pictures.  Its completely okay to not be totally comfortable with the idea of being in front of the camera.

Its scary.  Sometimes it’s vulnerable. And its likely a new experience.

However, if you’re willing to give it a chance and put some trust in your photographer, it can be awesome.

4 Tips for a Fun Engagement Session

  1. Its going to feel awkward at first–own it

Almost everyone thinks they are going to be awkward in front of the camera.  But I can tell you from experience that you will likely feel more awkward than you look. The first 10 minutes of a session are the worst for the awkward feeling.  This is when you first start to realize how vulnerable it feels to have a camera trained on you.  All I can say is “own it”.  Know that I’m going to do my best to loosen you up quickly by giving you something to think about other than the fact that you’re having your photo taken.  Try to remember to move and take some time to shake it out whenever you need to.   And know that it will get less awkward-feeling very quickly.

  2. Be willing to do something that sounds silly

I’m a quiet person but I’m also not afraid to be silly.  I’m a big believer that being willing to do something out of your norm is a great way to create genuine emotion and reactions.  So my advice here is to just go with it.  If I ask you to do something that sounds weird or funny, just give it a try.  We won’t stay on one thing too long and the more you embrace the silly the better your photos will be.

  3. Be willing to be adventurous

Light and location inspire me and I will ask you do a little adventuring with me.  Whether that is walking across rocks for a view, tromping through calf-deep snow, or hiking to a gorgeous location, be willing to go with it.  The more you let go and trust your photographer and their vision, the happier you’re going to be with your photos.

  4. Alcohol is okay

I don’t mean that you should get totally drunk before your session (in fact please don’t). But a little something to help loosen you up is never a bad thing.  I’ve had couples share whisky shots right before we start the session.  And many couples break out champagne during the shoot.  If this is what you need to get you to a place where you can relax a bit, I’m all for it.  Just make sure you plan for your drive home.
