8 Tips for Picking the Perfect Engagement Session Outfit

One of the most common questions I get during the wedding planning process is: “do you have any tips for what to wear to our engagement session?”

And through the years, I’ve realized that there are definitely things I like to tell people to help them feel the most prepared and confident for their session.

So here is a roundup of the most common tips I have for picking the perfect engagement session outfit!

8 Tips for Picking the Perfect Engagement Session Outfit

  1. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel good. You want to be comfortable and feel like yourself, even if you’re dressing it up a little bit. Are you a high heels person? You could wear some! Love your cozy button ups? Don the plaid and own it.
  2. You’re welcome to bring two outfits if you’d like. Many people like to have a more casual and a more dressy option. This often works well if we’re exploring two different locations during your session.
  3. Don’t be afraid of color! I love color, so I will always recommend it. But I also find that color stands out against hte varied natural backdrops that Colorado has to offer. Snow on the ground? Think about a royal blue or a bright yellow beanie. Out in Rocky Mountain National Park in the summer where there are greens and browns everywhere? Consider a burgundy or a navy outfit.
  4. Avoid small patterns, like small checks or small stripes. This one is interesting because in person these patterns look great, but on a digital photograph they can do funny things to the eyes. One way to check if your pattern is too small is to take a photo of it with your phone. Then look at it. If you feel like your eyes are jumping just looking at it, pick a different outfit.
  5. Don’t be afraid to go a little heavier on the make-up (if you wear make-up), as it never reads as dark or heavy on camera as it might look to you in the mirror.
  6. Jackets and blankets are great, whether as part of your outfit, or as a comfort item for the session. If it’s a fall session, a jacket can add a bit of upscale style. And if it’s cold or windy, you’ll want those extra layers available when we’re not taking photos. Hand warmers are also a really good idea when it’s cold!
  7. As for shoes, consider the ground you’ll be walking on. While some locations, will have densely packed, easy to walk trails, other spots might have you walking through tall grass. Just use some common sense here.
  8. Don’t forget that accessories matter! A great pair of earrings, or a cool bow tie can bring an element of fun or whimsy to a session. And if we’re taking more intimate images, those accessories often have a prominent place in the frame that can really elevate a look.
  9. Bonus tip: you’re welcome to bring champagne or sparkling cider, or hot chocolate, or anything fun like that.
