Adventures in Film Part 1

Recently I pulled out an old manual focus film camera that I inherited from my grandma.  I used it for my very first black and white film class about 6 years ago, but haven’t done much with it since.

I really admire those wedding photographers who use film and I really like how film and their vision manifests itself into amazing photos with beautiful color tones.  Film (when used correctly), provides a very nice color palette, doesn’t blow out the highlights as easily as digital, and creates natural looking skin tones.

I shot my first roll of color film, Fuji400, on a Nikon FE camera, over the course of a few months, on both our styled shoot in July and on three photoshoots I did in Washington in August.

The manual focus is definitely something to get used to, especially when shooting at 1.4, and I know the sensor is super super dirty.  There also seems to be a weird band of light that shows up in some of the photos, leading me to believe that this camera needs some TLC at a camera store.

Whether I continue to use this camera, or look into another film camera option (maybe one that auto focuses), I would like to continue to experiment with film, even if its just on my own time.

  1. Hey! The color on these looks great! And a ‘light band’ could just be a light leak–maybe your camera back needs to be sealed better so that it doesn’t allow any light to get into the back of the camera + overexpose the film on those strips. How do you feel about your first roll? WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE! ;)

    1. Thanks Ashley! I had fun shooting, but I definitely need to adjust to the equipment. Does your camera auto focus? It was tough trying to manual focus, especially since it center focuses and I”m so use to focusing with my focusing points on my digital camera! It’ll probably be a slow, for fun project for awhile, taking a photo at this shoot, and a photo at that shoot. Mostly I’ve found myself remembering to pull it out at styled shoots, but I’ll try on regular sessions, too!
