Dream Lake Proposal | Rocky Mountain National Park | Maritza and Steph

Maritza first contacted me about a surprise proposal back in March.  She and Steph were planning an adventure trip to  Colorado together and she wanted to cap off their experience with an engagement.  We quickly settled on Rocky Mountain National Park and Dream Lake as the perfect spot and we spent the next three months planning our surprise approach.

I’m so excited to say that we pulled it off!

Maritza and I rendezvoused in front of the bathrooms at the Bear Lake trail head, giving each other covert glances before heading up the trail.  I kept about 30 feet in front of them during the hike to ensure that I arrived at the lake before them.  We’ll try to forget about the time when I led a group of hikers (including Maritza and Steph!) off the snow-covered trail in the wrong direction :)

Then it was time to sit back and wait for the right moment for the Dream Lake Proposal!

Maritza chose the perfect spot in front of Dream Lake to pop the question and successfully distracted Steph in a search for wildlife in the trees while she pulled out the ring.  Shocked, I believe Steph said “shut up” before gleefully saying “yes”.

The two were all giggles and smiles from this point on, and once I introduced myself as the photographer, and not a random stranger, we took some time to wander around Dream Lake for photos.  We’ve had so much snow and rain this year, that the lake was still partially frozen and there were places where the snow still covered the lake.  It provided some awesome variety to the scenery!

One of my favorite moments was when Maritza gave Steph a letter she had written expressing her feelings.  It can be stressful to plan (and execute!) the correct words during the moment of the actual proposal, so I think an accompanying letter is the perfect compliment to the moment.

Maritza and Steph are considering coming back to Colorado for a destination wedding next year and I can’t wait to hear how their plans unfold!
