Goal #17 – Using a Video Light

Its been one of my photographic goals this year to learn a new lighting technique.  I’m working on perfecting my off camera technique, and as I’m working on that I’m also utilizing video light more and more.  One of the things I like about video light is that I can meter what I’m seeing through the lens as opposed to having to do some quick thinking to figure out what power I need to have my flash set to.  It also gives me the option of shooting at lower ISOs than if I just shot in ambient light.

I’ve used the light at a wedding reception to photograph details, at a styled shoot to get the details when we were fighting darkness, at a shootout after the sun went down altogether, and at a cake cutting at twilight.  I’ve been happy with all of the results so far.

Check them out below and stay tuned for more examples of our video light use!
