Goal #93 (v.2.0) – Smithsonian Museum of American History

If you know me, you know that I’ve always loved history–the older the better.  I love environmental history (think plate tectonics and the movement of the continents millions of years ago), European history (hello War of the Roses and the Plantagenet Monarchy), and American history (Colonial times is my jam).

So when we were visiting Washington DC for Sarah and Chris‘ wedding, one thing I definitely wanted to do was visit the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

When I was working on my M.A. in Museum Studies from George Washington University, I spent a ton of time at the Smithsonian museums.  I took classes taught by anthropologists at the National Museum of Natural History, did my internship in exhibit graphic design at the National Air and Space Museum, and took an Archives class at the Museum of American History.  Its actually a pretty amazing thing that all of the Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall are free and you can just wander in whenever you need a museum fix.

When we lived in DC, the Smithsonian Museum of American History was probably the museum that I visited the least.  With my internship at Air and Space, some volunteering I did in the Bioanthropology Lab at Natural History, and the lunchtime visits I took to the Renwick Art Gallery (just three blocks from my office at GW), I saw a lot of Smithsonian museums, but spent very little time at the American History.

So, this time I knew that it was the one museum I wanted to hit up.

  1. My mom took me to DC when I graduated college–we didn’t have enough time to do and see everything…thanks for reminding me of a new place to add to my bucket list!

  2. Love that you are pursuing your own personal goals…and not only that you have a list. Haha I’m a list girl myself. But you make me want to see these places! Love learning a little more about you!

  3. Awesome! Glad to see you went :) When I lived there I never got to go, so I will add it on my list when I visit again :)

  4. This is so cool! I got to go there once for a quick hour, wish I’d had more time in the rush to see everything we wanted to see. Your love of history is so awesome. . .
