Lost Gulch Headshots by Kyla Fear Photography

As a photographer, it can sometimes be difficult to get in front of the camera.  I’m so used to directing others on how to do it, but its rare that I let others direct me.  For me, who doesn’t like to be the center of attention (like EVER), it can be a real mental battle.  I wonder if my hair looks okay? Should I be smiling? What the heck do I do with my hands??

Thankfully, these concerns rarely surface when Heather and I are having our pictures taken.  In that situation, I have another person to share the spotlight and it never feels as awkward.  It’s no wonder I love working with couples best.  I can totally relate to the ease that comes with being with the person you love.

However, this year I did need new headshots, so I looked around a chose my good friend Kyla Fear Photography.  If I couldn’t have Heather next to me for these photos, the next best thing was having a friend on the other side of the camera.  Someone who wasn’t afraid to tell me that my resting face looks bitchy or that the light sucks and we need to move.  Someone that I trusted to deliver what I needed.

My goal for these photos was to focus on two of the things that I feel really define me to the core: my love for converse shoes (and the exploring you can do in them) and the mountains.  We chose Lost Gulch Overlook for the session and had a perfect mix of sun, clouds, breeze, and epic mountain views at sunset.

I love the results.

If I can leave you with one piece of advice for those of you who are scared of getting in front of the camera yourself, its trust your photographer.  Don’t try to do too much; let them guide you.  Talk about what you want and then let them create according to their artistic vision.  And finally, become friends with your photographer.  Get to know them and let them get to know you.  It really makes a difference.

Finally, a big thank you to Brittany Slaughter of Alchemy Creative for make-up that made me look and feel beautiful!
