Shooting Medium Format Film | Film Friday – August 7, 2015

One of my business goals this year is to try to shoot one roll of medium format film at every wedding. I’m enjoying this process so far, focusing on using the camera for portraits alongside of my amazing digital camera.

Your can follow along with my results on Film Fridays :)

Portra 800
Pentax 645
75mm f/2.8
Indie Film Lab

Taken at Monica and Jason’s Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield wedding.

As I was looking at my most recent set of film scans (completely ROCKED by Indie Film lab) I was thinking about my go-to lens the 75mm f/2.8 and whether it gave me the kind of depth of field that I was hoping for.  Heather even asked me “can you tell the difference between film and digital?”  My initial answer was “not completely“.  But then as I was working on my film blog posts I came across the below images and looked at them more carefully.

And my new answer is “yes–absolutely“.  I can see the differences in the beautiful bokeh in the background and in the separation of Monica and Jason from their backdrop.  The 75mm lens on a medium format camera is equivalent to my 50mm on my digital camera and I don’t believe that I would have gotten the same smooth and creamy background and separation from my 50mm.

I’ll have to test that one someday…
